Steam yacht
News and Citizen 6/25/1 891 - The long talked of steamer has arrived. lVs name has been the “Caspian”
and has formerly cruised upon Caspian Lake. It is a steam yacht 30 feet long, 8
feet beam with 10 horse boiler and six horse engine.
It was taken to Lake Elmore Tuesday and will be at once painted and put in trim

proprietor and the steam yacht is working on the boat.
A pier of 80 feet long has also been commenced. The boat was successfully
launched 7-1-1 891 and the whistle can be heard for miles.

News and Citizen 8-6-1 891 - The outing was a success last Tuesday. The Hyde
Park band was present and well sustained their reputation. Quite
a company were present mostly from Morrisville. The music was mostly
given from the barge which was towed over the lake by the steamer.

News and Citizen 7-23-1891 - The Yacht Club assisted by our people has opened a
camp on the East side of the lake in the wood lot of the Dea.
Camp farm and a cottage 18 x 24, two stories high with a 6 foot veranda is
being erected. This is said to be the best place for a camp in the neighborhood
being accessible to teams and well shaded. 7/30/1 891 - A pier has been
commenced at the new camp. The cottage at the new camp is mearly
compleated and has a very neat and snug appearance.
For more information see Boynton, L. B. 11/12/1891 - The steam yacht was taken
from the lake by Morrisville parties last Friday and Saturday and rests upon
the shore near the landing. The lake has been partially covered by ice for
several days. 8-6-1891 - A party of 11 ladies from Morrisville have been
stopping at Camp Idlewild this past week.

News and Citizen 7/30/1891 - The tannery boys of Morrisville took a half day
holiday here last Saturday, the steam yacht being the chief object of interest.

lumber to the camp.

News and Citizen 7-2-1891 - The man or woman who opens a good hotel here within
a month and is endowed with the faculty of making people comfortable and
feeling at home will have their hands full. Unless all signs fail there will be
some visitation at Elmore Pond this season and heretoforth.
Now let every citizen manifest a desire to help the cause by contributing time,
good will and cash and ere long Elmore will become what all agrees it should be
- one of the best places of summer resorts in New England. All agree that
nature has favored this town with proper gift and that it only needs human
efforts to be made available. 7/23/1891 - C. L. Brown, Artist of Peacham, was in town last week with his wife and took
several views of the lake, village and residences.

In Historical Sketch (Article 25) - The possibility of exploiting the
recreational advantages of Lake
Elmore and the neighboring territory resulted in the incorporation in 1892 of
the Elmore Pond
Turnpike and Building Company. The charter of this company was the last
turnpike charter

issued by the State of Vermont. The
company had an ambitious program of development which included the construction
of a plank road around the lake and to the top of Elmore Mountain, the
operation of a hotel, and the building and renting of boats. Financial
difficulties prevented the carrying out of the project.

News and Citizen 6/30/1897 - The musical (?) whistle of the steam yacht “Idewilde” is again heard floating over the waters of our
little lake”.

News and Citizen - Fred Moulton spent Sunday in Myron Spaulding’s hotel on
Elmore Mountain.

News and Citizen 7/15/1905 - There are a large number of campers at Lake Elmore
these days. As a summer resort the vicinity is becoming more popular each year.
5/3/1907 - Everybody is all ready for the Celebration tomorrow. It will be the
first time Elmore has ever celebrated the Fourth and no pains will be spared to
make it a great success. There’ll be fun from day light to dark and fireworks
in the evening.

News and Citizen 7/2/1 891 - Charles Fenn caught a
pickerel which weighed 5 lbs. This is the largest yet.

News and Citizen 6/25/1891 - Four pickerel were taken from the lake Thursday of
last week which weighed 4 lbs each. A 5th weighed 3 lbs. It is claimed that 40
lbs of these fish were taken from the lake on that day. Has this been beaten in
northern Vermont.

News and Citizen 7/20/1 898 - The perch in Elmore Pond are dying and floating
up on the shores in great numbers. Their death is supposed to be due to
a parasite which attaches itself to them.

Morrisville Messenger - 7/7/1915 - Robert St. Jock had the good luck to catch a
brown trout weighing 4 lbs. and measuring 24” long.

1936 State Park
In Historical Sketch (Article 25) - n 1936 residents
of Elmore and Morristown purchased 140 acres of land, including half a mNe of waterfront on Lake Elmore and presented it to the
State as the Elmore State Forest Park. A CCC project was set up here. The beach
was put in condition for bathing, trails were laid out
on Elmore Mountain and picnic areas developed. The park has become a favorite
recreation area for towns in the vicinity and for summer visitors (as of 1936)
and is the source of considerable revenue to the inhabitants.
